A man in his twenties has tragically died near the Notting Hill Carnival in London on Monday afternoon, according to the Metropolitan Police. Officers tried to stop the individual as he approached the event, but he fled on foot and soon entered the water close to Meanwhile Gardens. Despite efforts from both police and members of the public to rescue him from the canal, the man was later pronounced dead in hospital.
The incident unfolded around 15:19 BST near Harrow Road, where police attempted to intervene. Following his entry into the water by Kensal Road, those present, including officers, entered the canal to pull him out and immediately began administering CPR. Paramedics continued medical treatment on-site before transporting him to a hospital in central London, where he was pronounced deceased at 16:43 BST.
Commander Claire Smart, who is the gold commander for the Notting Hill Festival, described the situation as tragic and extended sympathies to the man’s family. She emphasized that deaths involving police contact are referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct to ensure a thorough investigation is carried out. She urged the public to refrain from speculation while inquiries remain underway. Additionally, she acknowledged the efforts of officers and the public involved in the rescue attempts, expressing sadness that the man’s life could not be saved.
Aside from this incident, the Metropolitan Police noted that the two-day carnival had passed mostly without major issues. There were two knife-related assaults—a stabbing and a slashing—though neither resulted in life-threatening injuries.
