Police in Liverpool are appealing for help from the public after the discovery of a woman’s body in Stanley Park. The unidentified woman, believed to be in her seventies, was found in a black bin bag in the park’s walled garden area. Merseyside police were alerted to the find by a passerby at approximately 5:25 pm on Friday, 28 August.
A postmortem examination took place on Saturday, 29 August, but its results have been withheld as part of the ongoing investigation, according to Detective Superintendent Rachel Wilson. She explained at a press conference on the following Monday that efforts to identify the woman have so far been unsuccessful, despite extensive inquiries. Forensic investigations remain ongoing, and the police are conducting a range of inquiries including door-to-door visits and reviewing CCTV footage.
The woman was described as white, about 1.57 meters (5 feet 2 inches) tall, with a small build and strawberry-blond hair. At the time of her discovery, she was wearing a pink Nike T-shirt. Police have checked missing persons reports in Merseyside and beyond but have not yet matched these with the unidentified woman. Wilson noted that sometimes people go missing without their families immediately realizing it, which can complicate identification.
Assistant Chief Constable Andy Ryan acknowledged the unsettling impact of the discovery and the visible police presence on the local community. Highlighting Stanley Park as a popular location frequented by dog walkers, families, and exercisers, he stressed the importance of getting answers quickly. Both Wilson and Ryan urged anyone with information or concerns about the woman’s identity or the case to come forward urgently by contacting Merseyside police or Crimestoppers
