Three teenagers have been sentenced to prison for the fatal stabbing of 16-year-old Kayden Moy on Irvine Beach in North Ayrshire. The incident took place on 17 May 2025 during a confrontation involving rival groups. Cole Turley, aged 18, who admitted to the murder, and Jay Stewart, 19, received minimum sentences of 16 years. The third individual, a 15-year-old who remains unnamed due to legal restrictions, was ordered to serve at least 14 years.
Outside the High Court in Glasgow, Kayden’s father expressed the family’s ongoing grief. Paul Moy said, “While today’s outcome brings a measure of justice, it does not bring peace, it does not bring our son back.” He emphasized the profound loss his family feels, describing Kayden as “more than a name in the courtroom or a headline in the news,” and lamented the irreversible damage caused by the violence. Paul further remarked, “We hope today’s sentence sends a clear message that violence has devastating and irreversible consequences.”
During sentencing, Judge Lord Scott described Kayden’s death as both “pointless and unnecessary.” The judge highlighted that the attackers had traveled to Irvine armed, seeking retaliation for a minor incident. He noted the tragic circumstances that led to Kayden’s vulnerability, saying, “It could have been anyone but Kayden slipped and fell.” Evidence revealed that Stewart and the 15-year-old, alongside Turley, pursued Kayden and repeatedly stabbed him with a lock knife after he fell. CCTV footage showed the three perpetrators hugging and shaking hands shortly after the attack. Disturbingly, they later created a rap song mocking Kayden while he was in critical condition in hospital, and Turley reenacted the murder at a friend’s flat used as a hideout. Although Stewart and the 15-year-old denied the charges, the court found them guilty following a trial. Prosecutor Liam Ewing KC described their behavior after the stabbing as “the actions of those who have accomplished what they came to do.”
The court was told that the attackers were affiliated with the Murray Boys gang from East Kilbride, while Kayden belonged to a rival group called Himshie. The three had arrived at Irvine Beach following an earlier altercation between the gangs. Stewart, who was also carrying an extendable baton, had previously made threats against Kayden on social media. The attackers threw rocks at Kayden and his friends in an attempt to provoke a fight. After the stabbing, the trio left the scene by taxi and returned to East Kilbride, entering the home of 19-year-old Fraser Wallace, a friend of Turley’s. Wallace gave evidence during the trial, stating that the 15-year-old had told him that the murder weapon was passed to Turley just before the attack
