Fans throughout Newcastle have been coming together to honor the memory of Kevin Keegan following the announcement of his passing at the age of 75. Despite not originally being from the city, Keegan earned the affection of Geordie supporters through his profound impact as both a player and a manager. His grandfather Frank was a County Durham miner and a survivor and hero of the 1909 West Stanley Pit Disaster, having risked his life to save fellow miners. Both Frank and Keegan’s father Joe were lifelong Newcastle supporters.
Returning to the club as a manager in 1992, Keegan cemented his legendary status by leading Newcastle to a remarkable second-place finish during the 1995-96 season. His tenure included overseeing the record-breaking signing of Alan Shearer in 1996 for £15 million. Shearer paid tribute by calling Keegan “My Hero. My manager. My friend,” and wished him a peaceful rest. After resigning in 1997, Keegan briefly returned for an eight-month spell as manager in 2008.
