Boy 'brought back to life' by rescuers at Bryngarw Country Park

A dramatic rescue unfolded at Bryngarw Country Park in Bridgend when a three-year-old boy was pulled from a pond after nearly drowning. Stefan Johnson, a father of two, was on a walk with his family when his partner Sophie noticed what appeared to be a child in distress in the water. Having recently completed a refresher lifesaving course just weeks prior, Stefan didn’t hesitate to leap into action, diving into the pond to retrieve the boy. Despite his efforts, he initially struggled to detect a pulse and immediately began performing CPR while Sophie called for help.

The distress call was soon heard by two nurses, Emma Brown and Kelsey Pirie, who were waiting on the terrace of Bryngarw House to attend a wedding. Realizing the urgency, the nurses hurried to the scene, discarding their heels as they rushed to assist. Upon arrival, they found the child unresponsive and showing no signs of life. Taking over the CPR, Emma and Kelsey worked tirelessly amid the growing crowd of onlookers. “We were not in work mode at all, there was no crash team to call and no emergency buzzer to pull. Instinct kind of kicked in,” explained Kelsey, who had never previously performed CPR on a child.

After an intense effort that lasted about five minutes, the arrival of paramedics marked a turning point. The boy “literally came back to life” as emergency responders took over care. Emma noted the incredible timing: had the boy been discovered just ten minutes later, the nurses would have been inside attending the wedding. Meanwhile, Stefan described the ordeal as deeply affecting him, with the incident replaying in his mind and even disturbing his sleep. Despite the trauma, he hopes sharing their experience will inspire others to learn basic lifesaving skills.

Emma and Kelsey echoed the emotional weight of the experience, acknowledging that it will remain with them forever but expressed relief and gratitude for the positive conclusion. Later that afternoon, after a short delay, they were able to attend the wedding of their friend. South Wales Police confirmed the child, who is from Newport, was admitted to hospital in a stable condition and that an investigation into the incident is ongoing
