Following a protest in Southampton concerning the killing of Henry Nowak, six additional men have been formally charged. The demonstration on 2 June turned violent, resulting in injuries to eleven police officers and a police dog. Protesters hurled various objects at law enforcement, including wheelie bins and chairs.
The unrest erupted after the release of police bodycam footage showing Nowak, an 18-year-old from Essex, handcuffed and dying from stab wounds. The assailant, 23-year-old Vickrum Digwa, received a life sentence with a minimum term of 21 years for the murder. In total, Hampshire police have now charged 20 individuals connected to the disturbances following the protest.
Among those scheduled to appear at Southampton Magistrates’ Court are six men facing violent disorder charges: Benjamin Jones, 23, of Eastleigh; Tyler Burley, 18, of Southampton; Mariusz Szczyglo, 45, also from Southampton; Kamil Josef Klonek, 33, from Southampton; Leon O’Leary, 41, of Basingstoke, who faces additional charges of obstructing a police officer and possession of an offensive weapon; and Harley Haynes, 23, charged with affray. Additionally, three others—Darren Medhurst, 36, Jordan Hambleton, 19, and Callum Darch, 27—were charged over the weekend with violent disorder and will also be appearing in court.
Henry Nowak, who lived in Chafford Hundred, was stabbed to death in Southampton during December by Digwa. The defendant claimed he acted in self-defense following racial abuse, a claim rejected in court. Nowak was a first-year student studying accountancy and finance at the University of Southampton
