Sir Keir Starmer is on the verge of unveiling new measures aimed at restricting children’s access to social media platforms, with an announcement expected within the coming days. This move comes amid broader government discussions about how best to regulate young people’s use of these digital services.
A speech scheduled for next week will outline the upcoming policy changes. The timing is significant as Sir Keir will also be attending the G7 summit in France, coinciding with the Makerfield by-election, where Labour’s candidate is Andy Burnham. In recent weeks, various options have been reviewed by government officials, including a potential outright ban for under-16s similar to the one recently enacted in Australia. There has also been consideration of allowing access to parts of social media considered to be less harmful.
