A public inquiry into the Nottingham attacks has exposed what has been described as a “catastrophic collapse of responsibility” and an “undoubted miscarriage of justice,” according to Emma Webber, the mother of one of the victims. The tragic events unfolded on the morning of 13 June 2023, when Valdo Calocane, diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 2020, fatally stabbed Barnaby Webber, Grace O’Malley-Kumar, and Ian Coates, while also attempting to kill three others.
Emma Webber spoke at a London press conference, reflecting on the emotional toll of the inquiry process. She characterized it as “brutal, bruising and harrowing beyond measure,” but emphasized its necessity. Highlighting deeper issues, she accused authorities of a “cover-up over candour” and affirmed that the tragic outcomes were not mere bad luck but the result of a significant failure in responsibility that demands urgent rectification.
The inquiry, which began on 23 February and concluded recently, revealed a series of systemic failings involving various agencies, including the NHS and Nottinghamshire Police, both before and after the attacks. Calocane is currently detained under an indefinite hospital order, having pleaded guilty to three counts of manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility, alongside three counts of attempted murder. Despite this, the bereaved families have expressed dissatisfaction with the sentencing, firmly believing the attacks could have been prevented.
As the inquiry moves towards its final stages, oral evidence has concluded and the core participants will present closing statements at hearings scheduled for September. The chairman, retired senior judge Deborah Taylor KC, is expected to publish a report with recommendations next year. James Coates, son of victim Ian Coates, shared his disillusionment with the institutional responses, noting that for a long time he and other families believed the authorities had done all they could.
