As anticipation for the World Cup mounts, Liverpool City Council is advising fans to plan ahead and avoid getting behind the wheel if they intend to consume alcohol. With large crowds expected to gather in pubs, bars, and private homes to watch the matches, the Council emphasizes that just one impaired driving decision can lead to life-altering outcomes.
In Liverpool during 2024, over 1,600 individuals were arrested for drink or drug driving offenses, and impairment was linked to 36 traffic collisions within the city. More than half of these incidents involved alcohol impairment specifically. Data further reveals that drivers aged 40 to 49 are the most likely to be impaired, and men are more frequently found driving under the influence of drinks or drugs than women. On a national scale, one in six road traffic fatalities is attributed to drink driving.
The legal alcohol limit for drivers in England is set at 35 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath. However, the number of alcoholic drinks that corresponds to this limit varies between individuals, depending on factors such as body weight, age, sex, metabolism, stress levels, the type of alcohol consumed, and whether food was eaten beforehand. The Government has introduced a review as part of its new Road Safety Strategy, which includes consulting on stricter drink driving regulations. This may involve lowering the permitted limit in England and Wales, establishing a reduced limit for novice drivers, and examining penalties and mandatory training for drink and drug driving offenses.
Liverpool City Council’s warning aligns with the Liverpool City Region Road Safety Strategy’s Vision Zero target to eradicate preventable deaths and serious injuries on city roads by 2040. The initiative also supports the Council’s “Call It! Enjoy More, Drink Less” campaign, which encourages people to recognize their limits and look out for friends. By fostering simple choices such as arranging safe transportation home, the initiative aims to keep outings enjoyable while reducing alcohol-related harm.
Councillor Dan Barrington, Cabinet Member for Transport and Connectivity, underlined the importance of these rules, stating: “The rules around drink driving are in place to protect everyone. Driving while impaired can cause serious injury or death not only to drivers, but passengers and pedestrians too. All we ask is that people plan ahead when heading out to the pub or a friends’ house to enjoy a match. Taking a bus, train, or taxi home might not always be as convenient as driving, but it’s a far better option than risking lives.” Additionally, Karen Blair, CEO of Aftermath Support, highlighted the human side of the issue: “Every year, families are torn apart by the devastating consequences of drink driving. Behind the statistics are real people who face unimaginable pain. During the world cup, we urge everyone to make safe choices, so no one has to face the heartbreak of losing a loved one to such preventable tragedies.”
