Officials have raised concerns about the impact of social media posts that feature mushroom picking on the ecosystem of Epping Forest in Essex. Although collecting wild mushrooms is prohibited by local by-laws, images and videos related to fungi have become increasingly popular online. Those who forage in the forest not only face the risk of fines or legal action but must also be cautious as some wild mushrooms are poisonous.
Caroline Haines, chair of the City Corporation’s Epping Forest and Commons Committee, emphasized the influence of such social media content, warning that posts depicting mushroom harvesting “can encourage others to follow suit.” She encouraged the public to admire the fungi through photographs rather than disturbing them, saying, “click, don’t pick.” Removing mushrooms from their natural environment can harm the forest’s delicate ecosystem, which plays a crucial role in recycling nutrients, supporting wildlife, and maintaining approximately 55,000 ancient trees.
Covering about 8,000 acres (3,237 hectares) and stretching from Manor Park to Epping, Epping Forest is recognized as one of the UK’s most important habitats for fungi. Haines explained that many fungal species rely on being left untouched to sustain the health of the surrounding environment. She further noted, “If somebody clears mushrooms from the bottom of a tree, they stop feeding the tree nutrients,” highlighting the importance of preserving this natural relationship.
Managed by the City Corporation as a registered charity, Epping Forest has recently been a site of notable fungal discoveries. In 2024, a new species named Hydropus inopinatus was identified at Burnham Beeches in Buckinghamshire. Furthermore, in 2025, the forest became the location of the UK’s first confirmed sighting of the rare Russula blumiana fungus.
