When the United Kingdom officially left the European Union on January 31, 2020, British nationals lost their status as EU citizens. As a consequence, they no longer had the automatic right to reside in Sweden. During the transition phase that followed, British residents in the EU could apply for residence status under a withdrawal agreement between the UK and the EU, but this option ended on December 31, 2021.
In the case of Mason, who suffers from health issues, a legally appointed representative called a “god man” was authorized to manage his affairs, as explained by Torossian. According to documents from the Swedish Migration Agency reviewed by the BBC, an application for Mason’s permanent residency was submitted on December 21, 2021. This application, however, was denied because the necessary paperwork to prove his eligibility for residency had not been included.
Another application was submitted based on Mason’s relationship to his son, Carl Mason, who holds Swedish residency, but this was also refused. Subsequent appeals made to the Migration Court of Appeal during June and July of this year were similarly rejected, despite medical reports stating that relocating Mason from his current care environment was “not medically justifiable” and could seriously endanger his health.
Nevertheless, court documents emphasized that Mason’s health status was not considered “life-threatening,” and stated that he would be able to receive adequate care upon returning to the United Kingdom
