A young girl from Norfolk, diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in 2023, has expressed her desire to become a doctor after experiencing the kindness and care of medical professionals firsthand. Bellamy-Rose, now six years old and living in Feltwell, was declared cancer-free in November following a challenging two-year battle. Throughout her treatment, she endured seven rounds of chemotherapy, hair loss, and the need for feeding via a tube.

Her recovery has been remarkable, and recently Bellamy-Rose had the opportunity to spend a day as a doctor at West Suffolk Hospital. During this special experience, she wore her own staff badge and scrubs and engaged in activities such as preparing patients for surgery, touring operating theatres, and visiting blood laboratories. She even helped care for patients, issued pretend prescriptions, answered phone calls, and experimented with medical equipment. Bellamy-Rose shared, “I want to be a doctor because they were nice and kind and very polite and made me feel better. Yes, [they are my heroes], so, I want to work with them.”

Bellamy-Rose’s mother, Paige, spoke about the impact of these difficult years on their family. She described the first year after diagnosis as “the toughest” and recalled how visits to West Suffolk Hospital and Addenbrooke’s Hospital became a regular part of life. Paige reflected, “The whole world literally just came crashing down and our life took a complete 360 overnight when she was diagnosed.” She recounted witnessing distressing moments, such as having to hold Bellamy-Rose still to administer medication crucial for saving her life. Despite the challenges, Paige believes the experience has strengthened their family bond.

Now back at school and thriving, Bellamy-Rose continues to attend monthly medical check-ups as part of her follow-up care. Her mother expresses immense pride, noting Bellamy-Rose’s determination and fearless spirit. Paige said, “I’ve been with her every single day of the journey and I’m very, very proud of her – it’s made her more determined and she’s got absolutely no fear.” Although the ordeal was harrowing, Paige sees her daughter’s strength and character growing, confident that Bellamy-Rose can achieve whatever she sets her mind to
