Former defence minister Al Carns has indicated that an upcoming major economics speech by Andy Burnham will be a key factor in determining whether he will enter the race for Labour leadership. As the MP for Birmingham Selly Oak, Carns expressed his anticipation for clear and concise goals outlining Burnham’s vision for the country over the next ten years.
He emphasized the importance of a concrete plan accompanying any vision, stating, “We need to see a vision, we need to see the plan because unfortunately a vision without a plan is a dream.” Carns outlined his expectations: “What I would like to see is where do we want to be by 2029 and where do we want to be by 2034-35.”
Expanding on his points, Carns highlighted several priorities that the plan should address. These include positioning the nation as the healthiest in Europe, boosting the GDP by a trillion pounds, ensuring national security, and providing a better deal for future generations. He stressed that while detail is not essential, the presence of a clear strategy is crucial: “And then a plan to deliver it, and it doesn’t need to be the detail but it needs to be there.”
Speaking to BBC Politics Midlands, Carns remained cautious, saying, “Let’s see how that lands, let’s see how much that pulls everybody together. I’m not going to start jumping up and down until I’ve had a look.” He acknowledged that to participate in any leadership contest, he must first secure the nominations of 81 Labour MPs along with endorsements from party affiliates such as trade unions.
