A 45-year-old woman has been sentenced to four years in prison after admitting to assisting her son following the murder of Kathryn Parton. Ms. Parton’s body was found in her Belfast home on Madrid Street by her father on 15 May 2024. The discovery had a profound impact on her family, who described their grief as overwhelming and life-altering.
Kathryn Parton’s partner, Jamie McAllister, along with his mother, Suzanne Love, were arrested in connection with the aftermath of the murder. Love, who is from Isoline Street, Belfast, appeared before Belfast Crown Court and admitted to perverting the course of justice by removing and washing items from the crime scene between 8 and 16 May 2024. She also pleaded guilty to assisting an offender during the same period. The sentence handed down by Madam Justice McBride was split evenly between incarceration and license.
The post-mortem examination revealed that Ms. Parton, aged 34, suffered extensive blunt force trauma, including multiple injuries caused by punches, kicks, and stamps. The pathologist determined that had immediate medical aid been sought, survival might have been possible. Evidence showed that after a friend left the property around 21:40 on 9 May 2024, Ms. Parton was uninjured. However, minutes later, Suzanne Love arrived at the house following a call from her son Jamie McAllister. Love found Ms. Parton lying on the bedroom floor, breathing but badly injured. Despite this, no emergency services were contacted. The judge highlighted that Love was fully aware of Ms. Parton’s critical condition and that her failure to obtain medical assistance deprived her of potentially life-saving treatment.
Further details indicated that Love’s actions involved tampering with the crime scene and hindered the apprehension of her son. Forensic findings showed she walked through blood in the bedroom and took steps to destroy evidence. Madam Justice McBride emphasized that Love’s conduct resulted in the body remaining undiscovered for several days. The emotional toll on the Parton family was emphasized in court, with both parents describing the profound and enduring pain caused by their daughter’s death. Geraldine Parton spoke of the permanent change in their lives, while Ernie Parton expressed his ongoing trauma from finding his daughter’s body.
Addressing the court, Madam Justice McBride acknowledged the devastating impact on the family, noting their new role as carers for Ms. Parton’s child. Representing Love, solicitor Philip Breen conveyed that his client had expressed remorse and shame over her actions, despite waiving the right to a pre-sentence report. The court was also informed that Love, who has previously been a victim of domestic abuse, engaged in courses and counselling while on remand.
