Two teenagers sentenced to life imprisonment for the racially motivated murder of an unrelated individual have had their case referred to the appeals court to determine whether their sentences were too lenient. The victim, a 38-year-old man, was fatally stabbed through the heart and subjected to racist taunts as he lay dying inside a neighbour’s house.
The defendants are Marcus Staniforth, aged 17, and a 16-year-old youth who remains unnamed for legal reasons. Both could potentially face longer sentences following the court’s review. During the trial, Mr Justice Griffiths described Staniforth as a “very dangerous young person indeed,” and told the younger defendant that he “instigated a deliberate, unprovoked, sustained, violent racist attack.” The judge emphasized that the 16-year-old was “old enough to know that to cause serious injury on a stranger because of his race was wrong.”
The attack occurred late at night on 30 June, when the victim, Kamran Aman, parked his car near his mother’s home on Barry Road at 23:50 BST. After consuming alcohol and drugs, Staniforth and the younger boy arrived at a nearby house and continued drinking. Upon spotting Aman inside his car below, the younger defendant decided to launch an assault. He initially armed himself with a hammer taken from the house but was disarmed. The assault quickly escalated with racist insults hurled at Aman. After failing to open the passenger side of the car, the youth moved to the driver’s side.
Aman exited his vehicle and attempted to defend himself against punches thrown first by the younger boy and then by Staniforth. Neighbours described a series of alarming and “relentless” shouting during the attack, with the teenagers likened to a “pack of animals.” Witnesses saw Staniforth briefly retreat inside the house before returning with a large kitchen knife, which he swung “multiple times” at Aman. Despite emergency paramedics performing open heart surgery, Aman died from a single fatal stab wound to the heart. After the attack, Staniforth washed the knife and his hands with bleach before both boys fled, but police arrested them within approximately ten minutes. Forensic evidence later confirmed Staniforth’s DNA on the knife and Aman’s blood on their clothing. Staniforth must serve 16 years and 133 days before being eligible for parole, while the 16-year-old has a minimum term of 14 years and 133 days
