A man with a strong interest in weapons has been sentenced to prison after authorities discovered an array of prohibited items at his ex-partner’s residence. Among the weapons found were a ninja sword, knuckle duster, an air rifle, and four telescopic truncheons. The individual, Maximin Carter, aged 51, was arrested following concerns raised over potential explosives and weapons on 14 February in Abergwynfi.
The situation led to a significant emergency response as locals were temporarily evacuated while police utilized “military resources” to carry out a thorough search of the property, which was treated as a major incident. Initially detained on suspicion of attempting to manufacture an explosive device, Carter faced charges for possession of a banned weapon along with six counts of being in possession of offensive weapons. At Swansea Crown Court, he entered a guilty plea and was subsequently sentenced to five and a half years in prison.
Carter’s ex-partner had alerted the police after becoming worried about the presence of weapons in her home, where Carter was staying without her consent. She had also expressed fears that bombs might be present. However, prosecutors clarified that investigators only found several plastic bottles filled with polystyrene, and no actual explosives were discovered. The house was reportedly in disarray, leading her to suspect the possibility of booby traps.
During the court proceedings, images were presented showing the weapons recovered, including the air rifle which was kept inside a wooden box and equipped with a self-contained gas cartridge. The prosecution emphasized that Carter’s fascination with weaponry was evident. Meanwhile, his defence highlighted his personal difficulties stemming from a domestic breakdown and noted that he was now receiving appropriate medication. The judge, Huw Rees, remarked that a prior caution and the significant amount of ammunition found alongside the banned weapon heightened the seriousness of the case.
