The BBC’s hit show Strictly Come Dancing has announced that actress Amanda Abbington will be withdrawing from the competition. The actress, known for her roles in Mr Selfridge and Sherlock, missed last weekend’s episode after feeling unwell, but it was expected she would return for the upcoming one. In her last performance, Abbington scored 31 points for a foxtrot to the Fleetwood Mac song “Everywhere”. Prior to the start of this year’s series, Abbington almost missed out on being a contestant after she suffered from food poisoning.
The withdrawal was announced on the spin-off programme entitled It Takes Two, in a statement read out by host Fleur East on Monday. The statement expressed that organisers wished Amanda Abbington the best for her future, and East played a compilation clip of the actress’s moments on the show, concluding: “Amanda, we are sending you all of our love”. So far this series, four contestants have been voted off: Eddie Kadi, Nikita Kanda, Les Dennis, and Jody Cundy.
Abbington, who was partnered with professional dancer Giovanni Pernice, has not yet commented on her withdrawal. However, following her absence from Saturday’s show, she shared a post on social media featuring the late actor Robin Williams, who suffered from depression. The accompanying message read: “People don’t fake depression… they fake being okay. Remember that. Be kind.”
Abbington previously upset some fans after a potentially offensive tweet emerged online, where she criticised a drag show aimed at families. Alongside her previous husband Martin Freeman, Amanda played Mary Watson in the popular crime drama Sherlock. Despite her withdrawal from this year’s Strictly Come Dancing, fans will undoubtedly be looking forward to seeing more of her work in the future.
