Rishi Sunak lands in Israel as world leaders seek de-escalation

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has landed in Tel Aviv and is looking forward to holding meetings with Israeli leaders to discuss pressing for humanitarian aid in Gaza. Among other things, Sunak will offer condolences for the civilians that have been killed so far during the conflict. This visit comes immediately after President Biden’s as world leaders step up efforts to stop the conflict with Hamas from spilling into the wider region. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has already visited, and French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to visit in the coming days.

The trip suggests a united front between Western leaders and is part of what is known diplomatically as “the Quint” – a group made up of leaders from the US, UK, Germany, France, and Italy. They spoke shortly after Hamas’ attack on Israel earlier this month. Sunak’s visit would physically show solidarity with Israel, pressing for humanitarian aid to reach Gaza, and emphasizing the need for Israel’s approach to a ground invasion to be “measured and calm.”

British intelligence services are working to establish who was behind the hospital blast that occurred in Gaza City during President Biden’s visit. Sunak has said that the attack on Al-Ahli Hospital should be a watershed moment for leaders in the region and across the world to come together to avoid further dangerous escalation of conflict. Sunak added that he would ensure that the UK is at the forefront of this effort.

More than 3,000 people have been killed in numerous airstrikes against Gaza by the Israeli military. More than a million people are displaced in Gaza, which is one of the world’s most densely populated territories, where supplies of essentials are in short supply
