Aérea Negrot, a Berlin-based Venezuelan DJ and singer-songwriter, has died at the age of 43. Her label, BPitch Control, confirmed the news and described her as “treasured and brilliant”. Born Danielle Gallegos in Venezuela’s capital, Caracas, she was raised by a family of professional dancers. After a knee injury halted her ballet career, she moved into nightclubs, founding the group Familia Felíz with Fata Kiefer and Milton Fermat, with whom she released the track “La Disco”.

Negrot’s stage name was inspired by her interest in travel and singers Toña La Negra and Olga Guillot. She studied at the London Centre of Contemporary Music after performing under the name in Amsterdam at the age of 17. In 2008 she joined Andy Butler’s Hercules & Love Affair project and contributed vocals to tracks on their Blue Songs album.

Negrot was signed to BPitch Control, where she released her debut album Arabxilla in 2011, along with several EPs. She collaborated with artists including Matias Aguayo, Miguel Toro, and Massimiliano Paggliara. BPitch Control described Negrot’s death as “beyond heartbroken”.

Negrot’s death has been mourned by the music industry, with tributes coming in from across the world. No details about the cause of her death have been released
