In celebration of Black History Month, radio presenter Esi has teamed up with Pioneer DJ and fabric to host a free workshop called Start From Scratch. The workshop is designed for aspiring DJs from underrepresented communities and will take place on October 18 at fabric in London. Esi, who presents shows on radio stations including BBC 1xtra, Capital Xtra, and Kiss, will host the event and share her insights into the industry, as well as guidance on DJing. Participants will receive a two-hour hands-on course in using Pioneer DJ equipment, and a free three-month license to the online educational platform Virtuoso.
Start From Scratch is one of more than 50 free events being run by Pioneer DJ across Europe to celebrate Black History Month, in support of emerging talent from underrepresented communities. EMEA Channel Marketing Manager William Dinsdale says, “It is our responsibility to provide the tools and platforms for DJs of all communities to thrive, and from this Start From Scratch was born. We can’t wait to meet some aspiring DJs and to see where Start From Scratch takes them.”
The workshop is designed to encourage Black artists to get involved and gain new skills in DJing. Hunni Sound recently announced a similar workshop to support femme-identifying, non-binary, and transgender people. Arts Council England and Mode London also offer free DJ workshops for 18-25 year-olds living in Haringey, London.
Participants will have the opportunity to gain insight into industry, develop new skills, and connect with Black music enthusiasts. Find out more about the next Start From Scratch workshop with Esi here
