Spanish police open manslaughter probe into nightclub fire that killed 13 people

A nightclub fire in the Spanish city of Murcia has resulted in a manslaughter investigation after 13 people were killed in the blaze. Fonda Milagros, and its two adjacent nightclubs Golden and Teatre, were affected in the early hours of Monday making this Spain’s deadliest nightclub fire in 30 years. Officials have yet to determine how the fire started and whether it occurred due to negligence. Police and forensic personnel have launched an investigation into the incident.

“The investigation of the fire will be difficult,” said José Luis Díaz Manzanera, Superior Prosecutor of Justice of the Region. According to Article 142 of the Penal Code, those responsible may face imprisonment of up to nine years if the cause of the fire was due to negligence. A recent report indicates that the company responsible for operating the nightclubs had permission to run only the Teatre, however, it’s unclear how it continued to operate Fonda Milagros. Murcia’s Deputy Mayor Antonio Navarro said council orders were issued to close both nightclubs back in January 2022, though an interview confirms that investigations are still underway to determine if these clubs have followed all safety regulations.

The Murcia nightclub fire is a developing story that may further uncover negligence cases for responsible management. However, let’s see how the authorities find more facts and evidence to follow this case.
