Juan Atkins reignites Cybotron for first release in 28 years

The iconic electro project, Cybotron, has been restarted by Juan Atkins after 28 years since the release of their single ‘Cyber Ghetto’. The two-track EP ‘Maintain the Golden Ratio’ is set to release on October 13 via Tresor Records. The label announced on Instagram: “Cybotron has re-emerged in our contemporary cybercultural age when artifactual futures begin a transition into a new era of ‘Meta’.”

The pioneering group was formed in 1980 by Atkins and Rik ‘3070’ Davis and is known for their genre-defining tracks such as ‘Alleys of Your Mind’, ‘Cosmic Cars’ and ‘Clear’. Their first album ‘Enter’ in 1983 is widely considered the first Detroit techno album.

In 1985, Atkins and Davis broke up due to creative differences, but Cybotron continued until 1995 with Davis and member John Housely. Meanwhile, Juan Atkins continued his career under several aliases such as Model 500. The group reformed in 2018 under Juan Atkins, Lauren von Oswald, and Tameko J Williams AKA DJ Maaco. After performing at the Barbican and Dekmantel, this year is the first time Cybotron has released any new material since 1995.

Lauren von Oswald has writing and production credits on the new Cybotron record, while TJ Hertz, AKA Objekt, is in charge of mixdown. The Hessle Audio producer described it as a proud moment. The upcoming release marks the continuation of the relationship between Tresor Records and Juan Atkins that began in 1992 with ‘3MB feat. Magic Juan Atkins’. ‘Maintain the Golden Ratio’ can be pre-ordered digitally and on vinyl.
