What went right this week: ‘spectacular’ renewables boom keeps 1.5C in sight

This week has brought a few reasons to celebrate. From Brazil’s historic decision on indigenous land rights to the success of Greater Manchester’s new public transport plan, there is positive news to share. Additionally, the International Energy Agency updated its Net Zero Roadmap, revealing that clean energy is growing at a spectacular rate and keeping the world closer in reach of the 1.5C goal. This news coincided with the UN-backed responsible investor network The PRI’s announcement that over 300 global climate policies will be implemented by 2050 to meet the sub-2C target set in the Paris climate agreement.

In other positive news, scientists from Yale and Mount Sinai universities identified key irregularities in people’s blood with long Covid, offering new hope and recognition for millions who have experienced this debilitating condition. Their findings have paved the way for a blood test that can diagnose the illness. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of Brazil rejected a proposal backed by agribusiness that argued Indigenous people could only claim territories physically occupied in 1988, opening the door for land claims from communities who were previously driven from ancestral homelands during Brazil’s military dictatorship.

Greater Manchester has become the first place in England to take back public control of its buses after 40 years, which could help reverse the decline in bus travel previously seen since services were privatised everywhere outside of London in the 1980s. As part of grander plans for a low-cost, integrated public transport system, it includes 50 electric buses and cuts the cost of joint bus and tram journeys. Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham said the move was a “coming of age moment for devolution”.

Finally, on the lighter side, cartoonists have provided a warm welcome to refugee children, helping the young individuals feel more welcomed after the tragic circumstances they have faced. This week’s round-up of positive news stories is a reminder that positive change is possible, even during challenging times
