Tributes paid to ‘Mirfield’s finest’ actor Sir Patrick Stewart

Sir Patrick Stewart, the acclaimed actor who rose from a humble background in a West Yorkshire mill town to achieve international fame, has passed away at the age of 86. Born in Mirfield, Stewart was widely recognized for his iconic roles in the Star Trek and X-Men franchises. He died peacefully at his home in Los Angeles on Wednesday after battling Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia.

His passing has deeply affected the community that he cherished, including the town of Huddersfield and its football club, Huddersfield Town, which he supported from a young age. Spen Valley MP Kim Leadbeater paid homage to him, describing Stewart as “Mirfield’s finest.” In a post on X, the Labour MP praised him as “an outstanding talent and someone who came across as a thoroughly decent and lovely” person. Leadbeater recalled her meetings with Stewart at Huddersfield Town matches and mentioned their correspondence, expressing how “incredibly kind” he was and how greatly he will be missed.

Stewart remained a lifelong fan of Huddersfield Town, often attending games whenever his commitments allowed him to. He notably celebrated the club’s promotion to the Premier League in 2017 at Wembley Stadium. The club itself released a statement expressing sorrow over the news and sending condolences to his family. They acknowledged Stewart as “a titan of his craft and a legend and hero to millions worldwide,” while also highlighting his Yorkshire pride: “Fiercely proud of his Yorkshire roots, Sir Patrick was a Terrier in every sense and we’re proud to have counted him as one of our own. Once a Terrier, always a Terrier.”

Beyond his professional achievements, Stewart’s friends and colleagues reflected on his personality and connection to his origins. University official Cryan reminisced about Stewart’s playful side, recalling an occasion when they both served as waiters at a university dinner, much to everyone’s surprise. Actor and close friend Sir Ian McKellen also emphasized Stewart’s allegiance to his home county, saying, “Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end.” Stewart’s own Instagram announcement of his death concluded with a passage from his memoirs, conveying a profound sense of belonging: “Like me, Jean-Luc has lived an unusual life that has taken him far beyond the bounds of normal human experience. But he is also someone who remains true to his earthbound roots, for they are what gave him his identity. In the end, he feels the call of home, as do I.
