The initial segment of the event featured a parade, which was followed by a number of speeches predominantly delivered by members of the Orange Order. While the gathering was primarily an Orange Order occasion rather than a political rally, many remarks contained an unmistakable political undertone.
Speakers openly criticized various figures including the chief constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), the secretary of state, and the first minister. In addition, there were subtle critiques aimed at the leaders of the two principal unionist parties: the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) and the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP). Lockhart was the sole politician to address the crowd from the stage. During her speech, she reaffirmed her stance to the DUP leadership with a firm warning: “Profound consequences must mean profound consequences. Michelle O’Neill must go,” she declared, concluding firmly, “That’s where I stand, and this lady is not for turning.” She was also invited onto the stage to be honored with a special gift recognizing her support for the Orangemen.
Nigel Dawson, who serves as the Portadown District Master, cautioned political figures that their positions could be jeopardized in the upcoming election due to the ongoing Drumcree dispute. He made clear that elected officials should be mindful of the power their constituents hold: “Politicians need to remember that we put them into office and we can take them out of office.” Dawson further emphasized the Orange Order’s determination, stating that they had secured the right “to return home via our traditional route and Portadown District intends to exercise that right on a date and time of our choosing, and if necessary, without further recourse.” Additionally, Alistair Power, Deputy District Master of the Orange Order, stressed the importance of unity within unionism regarding Drumcree, urging that it “must not be used by parties to attack each other publicly over differences of opinion,” adding, “We need to stand united.
