UK weather: Amber warnings kick in as Storm Boelo to bring 80mph wind gusts

Amber weather alerts are now active across northern regions of the UK as Storm Boelo advances, bringing wind speeds up to 80mph in the areas most severely impacted. The storm is expected to strengthen throughout Saturday night, with heavy showers and powerful gusts sweeping through Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England.

These amber warnings, issued for both Scotland and England, will remain effective until 9 PM on Sunday. The precautionary measures highlight an elevated possibility of travel disruptions and pose potential threats to public safety. This storm marks the second named weather event in just a couple of days, occurring while restoration efforts continue following the impact of Storm Austen.

The National Grid reported progress in re-establishing electricity, having restored power to more than 124,000 homes since Storm Austen began. Despite this, several hundred properties in southwest England were still without electricity on Saturday evening, and in northwest England, over 2,000 households remained without power due to the ongoing storm conditions.

The Met Office has warned that the strong winds could lead to power outages, structural damage, flying debris, hazards from large waves, and general travel difficulties. The most intense gusts are forecast to reach western Scotland late on Saturday before moving eastward into the overnight hours and continuing through Sunday. On Saturday evening, wind speeds had already reached 75mph at locations including South Uist Range, Western Isles, Highland, and Eilean Siar in Scotland
