Starting later this month, a significant £12 million project aimed at enhancing safety and accessibility along a major Liverpool thoroughfare will commence. The improvement works will focus on over 2 kilometers of Vauxhall Road, stretching from Tithebarn Street to Sandhills Lane, with activities scheduled to begin on Wednesday, 28 October.
The initial phase involves conducting detailed surveys of the area. These will take place under lane closures to ensure the safety of workers and will be clearly indicated to motorists. Drivers are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance, allowing extra travel time and considering alternative routes to avoid disruption. As part of the upgrades, the scheme will feature better footpaths, a fully segregated cycle lane, and new pedestrian crossings at several busy intersections, including Leeds Street, Burlington Street, Boundary Street, and Sandhills Lane.
Further enhancements include resurfacing the road surface to facilitate smoother travel for all users and upgrading drainage systems to reduce the risk of surface water accumulation on the highway. The entire project is anticipated to continue into the year 2028. To maintain safety during construction, some phases will necessitate temporary traffic management measures, such as road closures and diversions.
Safety improvements remain a central objective of the scheme, aiming to lower collision rates on this vital route. In September 2024, initial proposals were presented to local residents, with strong support demonstrated—81 percent of respondents were in favor of the plans. Throughout the duration of the project, public engagement events will be organized to keep residents, businesses, and commuters well-informed. This initiative is part of the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority’s Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan, which seeks to develop a comprehensive network of active travel routes across the region.
Councillor Dan Barrington, Cabinet Member for Transport and Connectivity, commented: “We are committed to investing in key routes on our road network right across the city to make them safer and more accessible for everyone to use. The improvements on Vauxhall Road will give people more choice in how they travel, whether that’s walking, wheeling, cycling, or using public transport. And for those who continue to travel by car, better‑designed junctions, clearer crossings and fully segregated cycle lanes mean safer, more predictable journeys for all road users.”
