Service changes due to Storm Austen

Merseyside is currently under a yellow weather warning due to strong winds affecting the region. In Liverpool, these gusty conditions are disrupting several services and planned activities today.

As a result of worsening conditions linked to Storm Austen, the River of Light event scheduled for this evening has been cancelled to ensure public safety. Additionally, the planned closure of Water Street will no longer take place. Attendees are advised to monitor official Visit Liverpool social media channels for updates on upcoming events throughout the weekend.

Several markets have been cancelled due to the hazardous weather. The Lark Lane Farmers and Craft Market along with the Tuebrook Market and Car Boot Sale will not operate on Saturday, 24 October. Likewise, the Cunard Building Market will be closed this evening, Friday 23 October. To protect safety and preserve pitch quality, all fixtures on Council-owned grass pitches are also cancelled for the weekend.

In response to the severe weather, the Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) has been activated. Residents urged to report anyone sleeping rough by calling 0300 123 2041, so emergency accommodation can be provided by the 24/7 outreach team. The public is reminded that windy conditions may create dangerous driving situations and increased risk of injury when outside. It is advised to limit outdoor activity, avoid sheltering near buildings or trees, and check on vulnerable neighbors, particularly the elderly or those living alone. For the latest weather information, people should consult the Met Office weather warnings and Liverpool forecast pages
