Liverpool residents will soon have access to a new confidential and free support service addressing financial, housing, benefits, and other life challenges. This initiative will be closely linked to local reproductive healthcare services, aiming to provide practical help tailored to individuals’ unique circumstances. The pilot program is set to commence in October 2026 and will be managed by Citizens Advice Liverpool, commissioned by Liverpool City Council’s Public Health team, running for a duration of 18 months.
Understanding that people’s experiences with abortion and reproductive healthcare vary widely, the service emphasizes choice and respect. Participation is entirely voluntary, and those who engage with the program will be treated without judgment, retaining full control over the type of assistance they receive. Depending on individual needs, support may include help with money concerns, employment and benefits questions, housing issues, childcare responsibilities, emotional wellbeing, legal matters, and connecting with relevant health and community resources.
Acknowledging the broader pressures that can accompany reproductive healthcare journeys, the service aims to simplify access by linking directly with reproductive health providers. This integration is designed to reduce the need for individuals to navigate multiple agencies independently. The focus is on offering compassionate, practical support that respects personal healthcare decisions, ensuring that people feel informed, empowered, and supported while having additional help readily available when they wish to take it.
Liverpool City Council representatives affirm the service’s importance in addressing the intersecting challenges faced by residents. Councillor Harry Doyle emphasized that no one should have to face difficulties like financial or housing problems alone, highlighting the service as a respectful and understanding resource. Councillor Rahima Farah stressed the benefit of reducing complexity when accessing support, while Professor Matthew Ashton noted the impact of social and economic factors on health choices. The new offering also aligns with Liverpool’s Sexual and Reproductive Health Strategy, aiming to improve overall women’s health outcomes by facilitating easier access to essential sexual health and safeguarding services. Users of the service will be invited to share confidential feedback to help shape future support options, with further details on access to be announced ahead of the launch
