US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has attributed the suspected terror plot at RAF Fairford to foreign involvement. Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Rubio remarked, “I think it ties us to the reality here, and that is we are dealing with elements in the world, and in the case of Iran, for example, who have openly threatened to attack American interests globally.” However, he did not disclose any specific evidence to support these claims. The alert was raised following reports of “suspicious vehicles” near the RAF base in Gloucestershire, a location long used by US forces for operations, including recent strikes against Iran. Authorities evacuated dozens of homes after three vehicles were spotted early Sunday morning. Five British nationals in their twenties were arrested on terrorism suspicions but were later released on bail. Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, leading Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP), emphasized that investigations are ongoing and that the possibility remains that the act could involve proxies or individuals working—either knowingly or unknowingly—on behalf of a foreign government.
During his comments on Fox News, Rubio highlighted the seriousness of the situation, saying, “What could have happened in the UK over the weekend is a very serious situation.” He added that more information would be revealed in the near future but noted, “there’s only so much I can say right now at this point about it.” The Iranian embassy in London responded by condemning the allegations, describing them as “unfounded and malicious speculations” linking Iran to the incident. Historically, the RAF Fairford base has served as a strategic forward operating location for the US Air Force, facilitating recent US bomber deployments to the Middle East after the UK approved its use for what the government termed defensive operations against Iran. In July, Iran warned that “any base used for aggression against Iranian territory constitutes a legitimate target for our forces.”
On the British side, the five men, aged between 23 and 25 from London, remain under investigation. According to Counter Terrorism Policing, their release on bail comes with stringent conditions restricting their movement and communications. At the White House, former President Donald Trump expressed surprise at their release, stating, “I will tell you, I would have said ‘Don’t let them have bail’. I’m surprised that they released them. As of Tuesday, security remained tight, with a heavily guarded police cordon still surrounding the RAF Fairford base. Residents in the nearby village of Whelford were allowed to return to their homes but were instructed by police to remain indoors and avoid photographing the area. One local expressed concerns, saying, “I haven’t gone home as I want to wait until I know more about what the hell happened, as it feels super dodge to me.” Local councillor Tristan Wilkinson described the community sentiment as a mix of “confusion” and “weariness,” warning that normal life in Whelford would be disrupted for the foreseeable future.
