A tragic incident involving a wrong-way collision on the A66 in South Bank has resulted in multiple fatalities and recent developments at a funeral service. Gye Worthy, aged 39 and the father of one of the victims, has been charged following an altercation during the funeral of his son. The disturbance took place at Teesside Crematorium in Middlesbrough on Wednesday, leading to his arrest.
The deceased, Cole Worthy, was only 17 years old when he lost his life in the collision. He was one of five passengers in a Volkswagen Passat that collided head-on with a marked armed police vehicle in the early hours of 22 August. The incident shocked the community, leading to two funerals held on the same day.
Among those killed was PC Matthew Blades, 37, an officer who was in the police car struck by the Passat. PC Blades was traveling with his colleague, PC Tom Clough, at the time of the incident. Their vehicle was monitoring the A66 after a cloned registration plate on the Passat triggered a camera alert, although the officers were not involved in the pursuit that occurred prior to the crash. This detail was clarified by the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
