Authorities in London have detained two individuals on suspicion of aiding Iran’s intelligence service, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Police. The arrests involved a 60-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman at residences within the city, made on Wednesday amid an inquiry related to suspected National Security Act violations.
Both individuals were apprehended on allegations of providing assistance to a foreign intelligence agency. Following their arrest, they have been released on bail with stringent bail conditions and are expected to return in late October. The Metropolitan Police clarified that these arrests do not pertain to any earlier incidents or attacks that affected Jewish and Iranian communities in London during the course of the year.
The operation came after police conducted two searches in June at homes located in north and north-west London. Commander Helen Flanagan, who leads Counter Terrorism Policing London, acknowledged that the news might cause public concern but reassured that there is no immediate threat to the general population. She emphasized increased activity in national security efforts tied to state-related threats over the previous year, indicating that this investigation is part of ongoing measures.
