A British man aged 31 from Swindon has been formally charged under the National Security Act in connection with alleged communications with Russia’s military intelligence. According to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), Joshua Cammidge is accused of receiving directions from an individual thought to be associated with the GRU Volunteer Corps, a group operating under Russia’s military intelligence agency.
Cammidge faces charges related to aiding a foreign intelligence agency and engaging in preparatory conduct. His initial court appearance is scheduled for Thursday at Westminster Magistrates’ Court. The initial arrest took place last Friday at his residence in Swindon, carried out by Counter Terrorism Policing officers from London along with support from Wiltshire Police.
Following his arrest, Cammidge was held at a London police station while additional searches were conducted at another Swindon location. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that he was subsequently re-arrested and detained under the National Security Act the following day. The specific legal allegations include assisting a foreign intelligence service under Section 3 of the National Security Act 2023, as well as preparatory conduct under Section 18 of the same legislation.
Frank Ferguson, chief crown prosecutor for the CPS’s Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division, emphasized the importance of the case: “Our prosecutors have worked to establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring the case to court and that it is in the public interest to pursue criminal proceedings.” He also reminded the public that legal proceedings are ongoing and stressed the necessity of a fair trial, urging against any reporting or online commentary that might prejudice the case. Meanwhile, Security Minister Dan Jarvis praised the police’s actions and reassured the public amid wider concerns about recent events in Europe, stating, “The police have taken action against a potential threat, and I thank them for the vital work they do every day to keep us safe.” He acknowledged the anxieties surrounding incidents intended to destabilize support for Ukraine but affirmed that such efforts will not succeed
