New data reveals that learner drivers currently face an average waiting period of 20 weeks before they can book their practical driving test, highlighting the ongoing challenges despite efforts to cut down delays. According to recent figures from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) for August, this wait time shows only a slight improvement compared to 20.2 weeks recorded in July. Furthermore, the typical interval from booking a test to actually taking it remains steady at 11.1 weeks.
The DVSA had originally aimed to bring down the average waiting time to seven weeks by the end of the previous year. However, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander extended this target deadline to summer 2026, before later acknowledging that even this new goal might not be attainable. Such adjustments underscore the persistent difficulties in managing testing demand and capacity.
In an effort to streamline the booking process earlier this year, the DVSA introduced several changes to how practical driving tests are scheduled. One major adjustment restricts the ability to book tests exclusively to the learner driver, effectively preventing instructors or third parties from making bookings using the learner’s information. Additionally, candidates are now limited to selecting test centres only within their local area, specifically choosing from just three nearby locations. This replaces the previous flexibility of booking tests at any centre across the country based on availability.
Another modification involves limiting the number of times a learner can reschedule their test date. These measures are designed to better manage resources and ensure a fairer distribution of testing opportunities within local regions.
