A 31-year-old man who had been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with a fatal house fire has been released without any further action, while a 23-year-old man remains in police custody for questioning. The tragic incident occurred in Grangetown, near Middlesbrough, during the early hours of Wednesday.
The fire claimed the lives of Natalie McDonald, aged 34, and her seven-year-old niece, Valentina Foster. Cleveland Police reported that a 48-year-old woman was critically injured and hospitalized, alongside three other individuals who sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fire are still ongoing.
Lisa Kirton, Natalie McDonald’s mother, spoke movingly about her daughter, describing her as “a beautiful soul, who would have done anything for anybody.” She also shared memories of Valentina, affectionately known as Tina, who had been staying with the family for the summer holidays and was “dancing around the living room” just the night before the fire. Kirton expressed her grief, saying, “She was a cute little kid… I can’t believe it, seven years old – it’s just a disgrace.”
On Friday afternoon, Assistant Chief Constable Dave Sutherland of Cleveland Police provided an update, stating that there is currently no connection between this house fire and a recent crash on the A66, which resulted in seven fatalities, including two police officers.
