A murder inquiry has been launched following a serious incident at a residence on Lisnahull Road in Dungannon, where a child remains in critical condition. The police discovered the body of an adult man alongside the injured child, believed to be a girl, at the property shortly after 11:00 BST on Saturday.
In addition to the child and the deceased man, a woman suffered injuries during the event, but her condition was not life-threatening, and she has since been discharged from the hospital. Authorities have detained a male suspect on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, and he remains in police custody as investigations continue.
Detective Chief Inspector Robinson from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) stated that the exact cause of the man’s death is still unknown, with a post-mortem examination scheduled to provide more information. He also emphasized the importance of refraining from speculation until more details can be shared. “I want to reassure the public that we do not believe that there is any ongoing risk, and at this stage we are not seeking anyone else in relation to the deaths,” he said, expressing condolences to the families and friends involved.
According to BBC News NI, the deceased was originally from Guinea-Bissau but had resided in Northern Ireland for over twenty years. The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) reported receiving an emergency call at 11:08 BST on the day of the incident and sent a comprehensive response team, including a helicopter crew, advanced paramedics, and a Hazardous Area Response Team, to provide assistance. Local Sinn Féin assembly member Colm Gildernew commented on the tragedy, highlighting the solidarity within the closely-knit Lisnahull community. “These incidents are dreadful anywhere they happen, it has hit the town of Dungannon at this point in time and the community here will react and respond to that,” he said
