A significant cyber security breach has affected three prominent airports in the UK, with criminal hackers gaining access to the personal data of nearly nine million individuals and subsequently demanding a ransom. The incident involved Manchester Airports Group (MAG), which manages Manchester, East Midlands, and London Stansted airports.
According to MAG, the attackers were able to obtain customers’ contact details, including email addresses, vehicle registration numbers, and postal codes during the weekend. However, the group confirmed to the BBC that they refused to pay the ransom requested by the hackers, although the amount demanded was not revealed.
The company emphasized that passenger safety and aviation security remained intact throughout the incident. They clarified that the compromised system did not store customers’ bank or payment information. In total, approximately 8.7 million customer records were accessed, primarily consisting of email addresses collected through WiFi sign-ups at the airports.
In an official statement, MAG reassured the public about the seriousness with which they handle customer data security. They expressed regret for any inconvenience or worry the breach might have caused, highlighting their ongoing commitment to protecting personal information
