A train derailment in East Sussex has resulted in twenty people being injured, with two individuals sustaining serious injuries. The incident prompted the declaration of a major emergency. According to Network Rail, the Southern service departing London Victoria at 14:24 BST en route to Eastbourne derailed near Lewes railway station just before 16:00 BST.
Images from the scene depicted people standing atop overturned train carriages, while passengers recounted scenes of chaos and screams. British Transport Police confirmed that three carriages had derailed, trapping several passengers initially, though all 150 individuals on board have since been evacuated. Emergency services closed multiple rail routes in the vicinity and urged the public to avoid the area.
At the site, medical personnel evaluated and treated those injured, with some passengers transported to nearby hospitals. Chief Superintendent Dominique Ioannou of British Transport Police stated during a press briefing that although some passengers were momentarily trapped, all were safely removed from the train. She further revealed that two people suffered serious injuries, while eighteen others sustained less severe wounds.
Passengers shared harrowing accounts of the incident. Rachel Heath described the train rocking violently before the carriage toppled, recalling, “It felt like we flew in the air and the carriage landed on its side and it slid. I felt like it was going to completely flip over.” Another witness, Rob Bradley, who was traveling with his six-year-old daughter, characterized the moment as “pandemonium,” explaining how the carriage jumped and skidded, and the emergency brakes caused passengers to be thrown forward.
