Big Issue vendors across the UK are facing significant challenges in selling magazines amid the country’s recent extreme heat, according to the magazine’s managing director. Catherine Parsons noted that sales have dropped by an average of 20% during weeks when heatwaves have been declared, directly affecting vendors’ earnings. Regions such as the West Midlands and Wales experienced the steepest declines, with sales falling by 34% and 33% respectively during June’s record-breaking temperatures.
George Anderson, a Big Issue seller near London’s Broadcasting House, explained how the heat affects his daily sales efforts. He pointed out that fewer people are out walking around, as many prefer to stay close to air-conditioned spaces during hot weather. “People are uncomfortable, they don’t want to hang around in the heat and chat,” he said on the hottest day of the year, acknowledging the difficulties but managing as best he can. Despite this, Anderson admitted that reduced sales are making the situation quite tough.
The Big Issue provides a vital income stream for individuals experiencing homelessness or financial instability. Parsons emphasized the gravity of the situation for vendors during such weather conditions, stating that while extreme heat is merely inconvenient for most, it translates into much lower earnings for Big Issue sellers. Many face hard choices about how to cover essentials such as rent and food when their income drops.
Data from the week beginning 22 June, which saw the UK’s June temperature record broken with highs of 37.7°C (99.9°F), showed that Big Issue sales fell by 22% compared to the same period the year before. This heatwave is the fifth in the UK this year, with the Met Office warning that this summer could be the hottest on record. In response, Big Issue teams have been supporting vendors by distributing sunscreen, caps, and water bottles. Parsons acknowledged that during peak heat, it is unsafe for vendors to remain outside selling for long hours, and any reduction in their working time has an immediate financial impact
