Forecasts indicate that temperatures could climb to 35C this week, marking the fourth calendar month within this year to hit or surpass that mark—a feat never before recorded.
If the mercury rises to 36C or higher, 2026 will set a new precedent by becoming the first year on record to experience four separate days at or above that temperature threshold. This achievement would exceed the current record of three days, a mark shared by the years 1990, 2003, 2020, and 2026.
Some locations, including London, might even reach as high as 38C. If this occurs, it would represent the second instance this summer that the UK has recorded a temperature of 38C, matching the peak measured in Lingwood, Norfolk, on 26 June. Such a reading would also be on par with the hottest August day since 2003, when temperatures soared to 38.5C.
