The Army Foundation College (AFC) stands as the United Kingdom’s largest military training center dedicated to under-19s and is the institution where the Army recruits all its 16-year-old enlistees. Recent disclosures have brought to light troubling reports concerning sexual offences associated with the college.
According to information provided by North Yorkshire Police in response to a Freedom of Information Act request, there were 16 reported incidents related to sexual offences at AFC within the last year, up to June. These allegations included serious accusations such as exposure, voyeurism, and sexual assault. However, the details regarding whether any of these reports resulted in legal action or prosecutions remain undisclosed.
Data supplied by the Ministry of Defence paints a broader and concerning picture, revealing that from January 2018 through to June 2025, the college received a total of 176 complaints involving inappropriate sexual behaviour. Women who attended AFC in the past five years have come forward with their experiences. One former cadet, referred to as Tilly for privacy, recounted a harrowing experience when she was 17. She described being raped by multiple fellow soldiers after being invited into their room, expressing the trauma: “They started taking my clothes off and then this led to them doing stuff I didn’t consent to. And then I was raped… by multiple junior soldiers, same age as me. It went on for hours. I felt like a piece of meat.”
In response to these revelations, a spokesperson named Streeting expressed sympathy towards the victims, acknowledging that they had been “badly failed” and commended them for coming forward. He emphasized the commitment to maintain “the very highest standards in uniform” and the importance of ensuring that every woman is treated with “the dignity and respect she deserves.” Further opinions were voiced by public figures, including Sarah Atherton, a former MP for Wrexham and an ex-servicemember, who stated that public confidence in the college “could only be restored through an independent inquiry.” Atherton had previously led a governmental review in 2021 into women’s experiences within the armed forces.
