William Orbit, the esteemed British music producer celebrated for his collaborations with iconic artists such as Madonna, Blur, All Saints, and U2, has passed away at the age of 69. His family and close friends released a statement on Friday expressing their deep sorrow over his death on 23 July at his home, though no cause was disclosed. The statement highlighted the profound impact Orbit had through his music, friendship, and kindness, emphasizing that he would be greatly missed by many.
Born William Wainwright in North London, Orbit played a pivotal role in revitalizing Madonna’s career with the 1998 album *Ray of Light*. This groundbreaking record merged electronic dance, ambient techno, pop, and trip-hop, earning three Grammy Awards and becoming regarded by many as the pop icon’s finest work. Orbit’s influence extended beyond this album, producing further collaborations such as her hit single “Beautiful Stranger” in 1999, which won another Grammy and featured on the soundtrack of *Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me*. He also contributed to Madonna’s 2000 album *Music* and later reunited with her in 2012 to produce six tracks for *MDNA*.
Orbit’s work reached far beyond Madonna. He produced Blur’s 1999 album *13*, which marked a darker turn for the Britpop band and spawned hits like “Tender,” “Coffee & TV,” and “No Distance Left To Run.” He continued to collaborate with Blur on the 2003 track “Sweet Song.” In addition, Orbit achieved success with Pink’s “Feel Good Time” from the *Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle* soundtrack, which earned a Grammy nomination and a UK chart high of number three. His production credits also include U2’s 2002 single “Electrical Storm” and All Saints’ album *Saints & Sinners*, which featured the popular Orbit-produced singles “Pure Shores” and “Black Coffee.” “Pure Shores,” co-written with All Saints member Shaznay Lewis for the 2000 film *The Beach*, was a dream-pop hit, with Lewis expressing her heartbreak upon hearing of Orbit’s passing.
Tributes poured in from musicians who admired his pioneering spirit and talent. Mel C of the Spice Girls reflected on the honor of working with Orbit on her 1999 debut solo record *Northern Star*, sending her love. Skin, the lead singer of Skunk Anansie, thanked him for decades of music that kept her dancing. Sister Bliss from Faithless hailed him as a “genius and pioneer,” crediting him for her own musical career.
