Established in Nottingham in 1887, Raleigh grew to become the largest bicycle manufacturer in the world at one point, with a workforce that reached approximately 8,000 employees during its heyday. Despite its significant presence, the company ceased bicycle production in Nottingham several decades ago.
In 2024, Raleigh relocated from its long-standing headquarters on Church Street in Eastwood to a new location less than a mile away, marking the end of an era at its original site. This move coincided with difficult developments for the firm as it faced financial challenges.
Accell, the parent company, announced plans to begin insolvency proceedings. Nilsson, a spokesperson for Accell, explained that the company had made extensive efforts to restructure its operations and finances. Despite thorough exploration of all feasible options, none proved sufficient to maintain the business in its existing form.
“Our immediate focus is to support an orderly process, provide clarity wherever possible, and work with the relevant court-appointed administrators to preserve viable activities and employment where circumstances allow,” Nilsson stated, highlighting the company’s commitment to managing the situation responsibly during this uncertain period
