The renowned light art festival, River of Light, is set to illuminate Liverpool once again this autumn, celebrating the theme of ‘Together’. Scheduled to take place from 23 October to 1 November, the event will attract tens of thousands who will have the opportunity to wander through an expansive outdoor art gallery, a beloved tradition in Liverpool’s yearly cultural calendar since its inception in 2018.
This year, the festival promises to be more extensive than ever before, as River of Light collaborates with Liverpool ABID to extend its reach into new areas beyond the familiar waterfront. Among the fresh locations featured in the trail are Williamson Square and St Pauls Square, which will welcome visitors to experience the festival’s array of light-based installations throughout the city centre.
All the commissioned artworks for 2026 aim to use light to foster joyful communal connections. The initial lineup of three featured installations has just been revealed, each marking either a European or UK premiere, with further works to be announced soon. “POP!” by Gentilhomme offers a collective engagement through five monoliths containing inflatable puppets that awaken with human interaction such as talking, clapping, or singing, transforming the space with sound, light, and movement. Meanwhile, “Dream Herd” by Amigo and Amigo playfully invites visitors to interact with illuminated sheep legs that trigger sounds, creating a shared dreamlike experience. Another highlight is “LOOP” by Olivier Girouard & Jonathan Villeneuve, which utilizes six large ‘zoetropes’ to animate flipbook-style films with light and sound in a communal setting; in collaboration with British Sri Lankan artist MURUGIAH, a new animation has been specially created for this event.
Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture, Cllr Harry Doyle, praised River of Light as a “jewel in the crown for culture” in the city, emphasizing its accessibility, creativity, and the positive economic impact tourism brings during the festival. Annie Brown, General Manager of The Municipal and Chair of Liverpool’s ABID Board, expressed enthusiasm for the festival’s expansion into the city centre, noting the advantages for local businesses, especially in hospitality and retail. Additionally, Abigaëlle Parisé from QDSinternational, which is presenting two of the installations, highlighted the engaging nature of “LOOP” and “POP!” and eagerly anticipates audience reactions to these captivating works.
