Bell emphasizes the importance of timely wage payments, noting that if wages are delayed or incomplete, it can cause significant financial hardship for individuals without savings. “If someone is expecting their wages on a certain date and it doesn’t arrive or it doesn’t arrive in full, then if people haven’t got savings, even a small amount of difference can be the difference between them paying their bills and not being able to pay them,” she explains.
For anyone who suspects they have been underpaid, Bell advises beginning by carefully calculating the correct amount owed by reviewing payslips, timesheets, and contracts. She recommends initially addressing the issue directly with the employer, as payment errors can sometimes be accidental. If informal discussions do not resolve the matter, she suggests submitting a formal written grievance that includes supporting documentation like timesheets, allowing the employer adequate time to respond.
Should these steps fail to reach a satisfactory conclusion, Bell notes that taking the case to an employment tribunal may be appropriate. “If someone gets an award at an employment tribunal then there are systems in place to help them enforce it if necessary,” she says.
