A tortoise named Arnie had quite the unexpected journey but is now safely back home after being discovered at a garden waste and recycling centre. The curious reptile, belonging to Jacqueline Sear, had hidden inside a garden waste bag that was later taken unintentionally to the St Erth Household Waste and Recycling Centre in Cornwall. Following the discovery, Suez, the company managing the facility, promptly reached out to visitors who were at the centre on the relevant day, hoping to find the tortoise’s owner.
Jacqueline explained that the ordeal began when she was filling a garden waste bag since Sunday. At one point, she noticed the bag had toppled over, but what she did not realize was that Arnie had deliberately knocked it down, climbed inside, and remained there overnight and throughout Monday. On Tuesday morning, unaware of the tortoise’s presence, Jacqueline took the bag to the recycling centre. Thanks to the booking system used by Suez, senior site manager Stuart Parker said it was relatively easy to identify and contact the people who had visited that day. Within just a few hours of sending out emails, Arnie was reunited with Jacqueline.
The staff at the centre regularly inspect the bins to prevent fire hazards, checking for items such as contaminated waste, gas cylinders, and batteries before compaction. When they noticed movement inside one of the green waste bins, they took swift and careful action to retrieve Arnie and ensure she was safe and away from harm. Jacqueline confirmed that Arnie was perfectly fine after her adventure, noting that the tortoise had access to plenty of food within the garden waste pile.
Stuart Parker also offered advice for those clearing their gardens: to be mindful that wildlife, especially creatures like hedgehogs, may sometimes find shelter in garden waste bags. Jacqueline described Arnie as “very curious,” and after this unexpected escapade, the tortoise’s safe return was a welcome relief for her owner
