Police in Cardiff have stepped up patrols along riverside paths following a series of incidents involving youths wearing balaclavas. These individuals have targeted both pedestrians and cyclists on the Taff Trail, which stretches for 55 miles from Brecon in Powys to Cardiff. Since June, parents have raised alarms after their children endured attacks while cycling along the trail in areas such as Hailey Park, Gabalfa, and Llandaff. South Wales Police have reported arrests, including those of boys aged 13 and 11, although official crime data for June on the trail has not been compiled.
A notable incident involved plain-clothed officers who were confronted by a youth ready to assault them on the Taff Trail. A 999 call was made regarding an attempted robbery near Sophia Gardens on 23 July, leading to the arrest of a 13-year-old from Old St Mellons and later an 11-year-old from Penylan, both subsequently released on bail. The police have confirmed that areas such as the Taff Trail and Bute Park are experiencing elevated levels of youth-related anti-social behavior, with numerous reports made in Llandaff North, Riverside, and Gabalfa throughout June.
Local residents have shared distressing accounts illustrating the impact of these attacks. Kirsten Price from Whitchurch described her 12-year-old son being assaulted by a gang of youths, some masked, near Blackweir in Cardiff, resulting in a struggle over his bike and escalating tension. Though her son escaped physical injury, he has been reluctant to ride since. Price expressed concerns over the behavior potentially worsening, worrying that these youths, believed to be aged between 12 and 16, might eventually become involved in carrying weapons.
Other cyclists have recounted similar troubling experiences. Rhys Holmes, who lives with a rare neurological condition, felt intimidated when followed by a balaclava-wearing individual on the trail. He highlighted how cycling has played a vital role in his mental and physical health recovery, making the presence of threatening behavior all the more concerning. Additionally, a mother from Llandaff North recounted an attack on her 13-year-old son near Llandaff Rowing Club, involving youths who knocked a bike wheel off and punched her son. Both police and Cardiff Council have pledged ongoing efforts to address these problems, increasing both visible and plain-clothed patrols, while also implementing measures like removing illegal bikes from the area to enhance safety for all users of the trail
