Katie Shanahan, the 22-year-old swimmer from Glasgow, made a significant choice last year that led her away from a reality TV opportunity and toward athletic achievement. Shanahan was invited to participate in the popular dating show Love Island, where contestants live together in a villa in Mallorca. Despite the tempting offer, she opted to stay focused on her swimming career, training rigorously at the Tollcross swimming centre.
Her dedication bore fruit at the Commonwealth Games, where she secured a silver medal in the 200m breaststroke on the opening night. Reflecting on her decision, Shanahan revealed to BBC Scotland News that although she was tempted by the chance to appear on the show, her commitment to swimming took priority. She expressed that she is an avid fan of Love Island and joked about possibly considering it in the future, but for now, her sporting ambitions come first.
The reality dating show has previously targeted athletes as potential contestants. For example, Northern Ireland boxers Jon McConnell and Kaci Rock made it through initial auditions but ultimately withdrew to concentrate on their sports ahead of the Games. Additionally, lower league and non-league footballers have appeared on Love Island over the years, highlighting the show’s ongoing interest in sourcing individuals from the sporting world.
Shanahan’s choice to prioritize sport over television clearly paid off, as she was visibly emotional after winning her silver medal.
