Several of the driest areas across the UK have missed opportunities for rainfall just before yet another heatwave begins this week. While some parts of northern and western Britain experienced rain over the weekend, with more showers and unstable weather anticipated over the coming days, conditions have not improved in southern regions.
The southern sections of the country, which have received the least precipitation, are expected to see a rise in temperatures alongside continued dry and sunny weather. Meanwhile, parts of Wales have now officially entered drought conditions. Much of southern, central, and eastern England remains in a phase described as “prolonged dry weather,” which is the final period before a drought declaration is made.
As the heatwave approaches, further drying of the landscape is predicted, with temperatures in south-east England potentially reaching up to 35°C (95°F). In preparation for these high temperatures, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued heat health alerts covering several regions, including the south-west, south-east, London, East of England, West and East Midlands, as well as Yorkshire and The Humber. These alerts are in place from 9:00 BST on Tuesday, 28 July, until 9:00 BST on Friday, 31 July.
The UKHSA has cautioned that the heat is likely to cause minor impacts on health and social care services. There is also an increased risk to life for vulnerable individuals, emphasizing the need for care during this period of high temperatures
