In 2024, Police Scotland announced that it had concluded its initial inquiries regarding an allegation of a historical sexual assault at the Balnagown Estate. According to a report from the Scottish Mail on Sunday, the investigation into claims of abuse involving Al Fayed has been reopened following the emergence of a new witness. This development comes after the force was initially unable to advance the case filed by Sophia Stone, now 58, due to a lack of corroborating evidence supporting her allegations.
Sophia Stone, who worked as a personal assistant to Al Fayed after joining Harrods at the age of 19, had previously told her story of being groomed, sexually assaulted, and almost raped by him. Her husband, Keaton, has spoken publicly about her experience, describing how she faced “constant harassment and sexual assault” both at work and during travel with Fayed, including on private helicopters and planes. Stone reported the abuse to Police Scotland in 2021.
Harrods has expressed strong condemnation of the allegations, stating it is “utterly appalled” and condemns his actions “in the strongest terms.” The company’s current owners have established a compensation scheme for former employees who allege they were assaulted by Al Fayed, reflecting their commitment to addressing these serious claims
